About Barbados
Barbados is one of the Caribbean's loveliest islands. Ringed by turquoise seas and white sandy beaches, and blessed with a verdant landscape, superb climate and friendly people, it's a major holiday destination in the Caribbean, particularly amongst wealthy individuals and celebrities.
For centuries, Barbados has been a haven of luxury and goodwill, with a blend of local colour and proud tradition. Bajans are probably the friendliest people you could ever meet, and you'll soon warm to the relaxed lifestyle of this island paradise. The tropical climate provides an average temperature of 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit (23-30 Celsius) and more than 3,000 hours of sunshine.
History
Originally inhabited by Amerindians, 'Los Barbados' was named by the Portuguese after the bearded fig tree that grew abundantly on the island at the time of its 'discovery' in the 16th century. The British arrived in 1627 and three centuries of colonial rule are still evident throughout the island today in its historic churches, forts, signal stations and grand plantation houses.
Barbados attained its independence on 30th November 1966 and continues to enjoy a stable and democratic system of government that's resulted in a strong economy, boosted in particular by tourism, offshore business and property development. The Parliament in Barbados dates back to 1639 and is the third oldest in the world.
Local attractions
Natural attractions abound, from palm-fringed beaches and tropical rainforests to botanical gardens and spectacular caves. The island's Caribbean spirit and exotic nature are reflected in its colourful festivals.
Amongst the wide ranging activities enjoyed by residents and holiday makers are golf, polo, horse racing, sailing, scuba diving and deep sea fishing. Cricket is the national sport and an intrinsic part of the island's culture. Barbados is also one of the best tax-free shopping destinations in the West Indies, and boasts an incredible choice of restaurants offering world-class cuisine, accompanied by glorious sea views
